Aviation and Flying: An Environmental Concern

Research shows that Aviation and Flying is causing huge damage to the environment and climate. It is 10 times more harmful that the train. Of the entire impact on the climate worldwide, the Aviation industry accounts for 13% and that it will quadruple in next 4 decades by 2050. Aviation is the major source of emission in the developed countries.

The surge in the short routes in each country across the globe and often the unnecessary domestic routes results in the widespread pollution. But this is just the way of modern capitalist world and the market is following the basic rule of economics, supply as per the demand.

This sudden surge in the demand is due to the cost cutting strategies by the industry. The plane fares are reduced dramatically and hence the demand to fly has increased. The increased no of flights per day across the globe has contributed to 70% increase in the greenhouse gas emission. This is causing an overwhelming increase in global warming level. Air and noise pollution is increasing dramatically. Wildlife, landscapes and heritage are getting harmed.

While noise and air pollution remains the major concern for the Aviation and Flying industry, there are other major concerns as well. Building an airport means, the land is to be taken away from its previous use. This can affect the wildlife and landscapes. Aviation also adds to water pollution. De-icing aircrafts in particular along with runways and other airport sites are the main cause. Waste management is a big concern particularly due to the wastes which are generated inside the terminal buildings.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that Aviation industry contributes to 3.5% of the total human contributions to global warming. The emitted gases from the aircraft engines contain a mixture of water vapor, nitrogen oxides and carbon dioxide. These gases are the major contributors to global warming by greenhouse effect. Creation of condensation trail and high altitude clouds due to the emission by the aircraft engines remains a major possibility and cannot be overlooked.

England is the worst hit country because of 140 civil airports which are licensed. The largest airports are concentrated around London. Noise pollution affects the quality of life because 80% of the population in the Southeast England stays close to the airports. Sleep disturbances, annoyance and other possible health effects are the major health concerns for the population in England.

Using other fuel sources and to avoid air pollution and other higher technology to minimize the noise pollution are among the few preventive measures that can be taken. Efficiency of engines can also be increased to reduce the air pollution level.

A proper management policy and technological advancements are required to take care of these increasing environmental issues. The day may be far but not impossible. We cannot neglect the issue facing the Aviation and Flying industry for our own good and can only strive for a better tomorrow.
